Response to autumn Budget 2024

Will Quince, Chair of Transport East, responds to the Budget Announcement:

“The East is a rapidly growing region, fundamental to the UK’s energy, food, and trade security. Our region plays an essential role in the nation’s economic prosperity. Yet, our potential remains constrained by limited transport connections and following today’s Budget announcement, it’s clear we still need to make the case for the necessary investment to support a thriving Eastern region.

“The announcement of funding to progress the East West Rail Central section is promising. While not directly within our region, the scheme lays the foundations to support growth in the East by opening opportunities for additional long-distance rail journeys between the East and other regions.

“However, to fully realise the benefits, particularly further east of Cambridge, it is essential that the Government commits to funding for the Ely and Haughley rail upgrades. The absence of a firm commitment is disappointing and we will continue making the case with partners for inclusion in the Spring Spending Review.

“While we appreciate the commitment from Government to keep bus fares lower with the new £3 cap, the increase from £2 will have an impact for passengers. Affordability of bus fares is important to people living and working in the East, especially those in rural areas with longer, more expensive journeys. However, fares are only one part of the equation – reliable services are also essential.

“The East will benefit from a share of the £500m increase for road maintenance next year along with the committed funding for local transport. Collectively, this will support local journeys both on road and public transport. However, we have noted the removal of funding for the A47 Great Yarmouth Vauxhall roundabout which is a long-standing local priority.

“A stable and consistent investment pipeline is crucial to ensure that our growth is both sustainable and beneficial to communities across the East, and the nation’s prosperity. As we approach the Spending Review in Spring 2025, we will continue working closely with our partners, local politicians, and the Government to make a compelling case for the transport investment the East needs and deserves.”
